Mini sessions are more appealing to many, but are they really what you want? Lets start off by explaining what a mini session and a full session actually are.
A mini session is:
10-15 minutes
fast paced
one location of photographer's choice
booked back to back with specific time block
on the photographer's date of choice
3 - 6 images
one outfit
receive photos quickly
non-refundable
A mini session is NOT:
no longer than 15 minutes if needed
on-time is late
stand-alone session
at client's location of choice
on the date of client's choice
10+ images
refundable or date change if in emergency
A full session is:
30 mins to hour an half
non-rushed setting
1-2 locations of client's choice
on the date of client's choice
35+ images in a gallery
1+ outfits
4+ weeks to receive gallery
can reschedule in case of emergency
A full session is NOT:
less than 30 minutes
at location of photographer's choice
on the photographer's date of choice
up to 25 images
gallery turn around less than 4 weeks
completely non-refundable
Now you have a better idea of what each session is so lets go into detail and discuss the pros and cons of both sessions. These pros and cons are subject to your opinion based off your needs; listing them out to better help you decide which session is your best fit.
Timing: With a mini session it is short and sweet; this is great if your tension span is short or do not like getting your picture taken. With a full session you can take your time and make sure you have the poses you want. If someone is not cooperating in your group you will not have to worry as you will have the time to wait and get everyone position right. Being late with either session this will take away from your time of your scheduled time; but being late is not sometime that can be done with a mini session. You will not be given any more time as the next client will be waiting for their mini session time. Depending on how late you may even miss your mini session altogether and are non-refundable.
Stacked Sessions: Mini sessions are never stand-alone and shot back-to-back. Mini sessions are booked and shot during a specific time block. Full sessions are shot one or two sessions on a given day. They are not back to back allowing some leeway.
Date/Time: Mini sessions are not offered all the time and the photographer will pick the date and time frames. They are first come and first serve for the times with limited spots. As for a full session you can have more control over your date and time. You can choose which month and choose your day from the dates available. Time for full sessions are usually around evening light but subject to change.
Number of Images: Mini sessions come with very small amount of images. Usually as little as 3 to 5 with no more an 20 to 25 images delivered in your gallery. A full session will come with many more images; ranging 25+. Having a lot of images to choose from is wonderful and also overwhelming at time also. They both will be presented in a gallery for your viewing. The delivery time of the gallery will be less than 4 weeks for a mini session and 6 weeks for a full session.
In conclusion:
Mini sessions are a great choice for: Short, refresh for some updated photos. These are great for certain events, house face lift, or just want to grab a snap shot of the kiddos who seem to change every time you blink. Mini sessions are wonderful when you would like several photo shoots in a year to get the different seasons.
Full sessions are a great choice for: When 5 images are just not enough, want more than one outfit/location, or need a certain date. Full sessions also give you more time to get those great candid photos. Full sessions will have a lot more variety in poses and with the selection is best for our coffee table album.
